Different Types of Magician Explained – And What Works Best for Events in Cambridge

When planning an event in Cambridge — whether it’s a university ball, wedding or corporate function — one of the most common questions is:

What type of magician should we book?

There are several different styles of magic, each suited to different types of events and audiences.

Having performed at multiple events in Cambridge, including university balls and formal functions, the choice of style can make a significant difference to how the entertainment is received.

Close-Up Magician (General Magician)

The most common type of magician for events is a close-up magician, sometimes referred to as a general magician.

This style involves:

  • performing for small groups
  • interactive sleight of hand
  • using cards, coins and everyday objects

At events in Cambridge, this is by far the most popular format.

From experience, the majority of events — including Cambridge  university balls — use close-up magic because it fits naturally into social settings where guests are standing and interacting.

This is particularly effective during:

  • arrival drinks
  • networking periods
  • informal parts of the evening

Mentalist (Mind Reading Style)

A mentalist focuses more on:

  • mind reading
  • psychological-style effects
  • predictions and thought-based routines

This style often appeals to Cambridge audiences because:

  • it feels more intellectual
  • it encourages deeper engagement
  • it creates a different type of reaction

At university events, including Cambridge balls, combining elements of mentalism with close-up magic often creates the strongest response.

Guests are not just watching — they are actively involved in the experience.

Illusionist (Stage-Based Magic)

An illusionist typically performs larger-scale magic, often on stage.

This includes:

  • visual illusions
  • larger props
  • performances for a seated audience

This is most suited for Cambridge corporate events where there is a formal dinner and the magician performs on stage between the courses of the meal. I took this approach at Cambridge orthopedics society annual dinner. This was held at kings college Cambridge, the venue had a big stage. This was a formal large scale corporate event where performing an illusion stage show worked well.

What Works Best for Cambridge Events

Cambridge events are unique because they often combine:

  • formal settings
  • large guest numbers
  • highly engaged audiences

9/10 clients reported that because of this, the most effective approach is usually:
